What is Core switch and how it works ?

Published by Naveed at 10:36 PM under Technology

Core switch is a switch, usually a L3, which is placed in the core layer of a hierarchical network model. The most important function of core switch is to switch packets as fast a possible. To make this happen the core switch needs to have the following -

- High Speed Processor
- Large Memory
- Interfaces with enough port to terminate all links from the other modules in the neetwork like the distribution layer switches, the server farm module, the enterprise edge module and so on.
- The links terminating on the interfaces should be high bandwidth links which can aggregate all traffic from the different modules.
- Should have QOS configured to have prioritised packets switched first

Usually there are two or more core switches in a network, which provide for redundancy.
