Open Windows Explorer (with current project files) in Visual Studio Tools menu

18. March 2008

We often need to open Windows Explorer and browse to the current file, folder or project that we are working on in Visual Studio. This tip (thanks to Daniel Flower) allows you to achieve this by clicking "Windows Explorer" in the Tools menu, and is one of the most simple, yet useful tips I know of.

Follow these steps to set it up:

In Visual Studio, click Tools, then External Tools..., then click Add

Now enter the following data (shown in the screen shot as well):

Title: Windows Explorer
Command: explorer.exe
Arguments: /select,"$(ItemPath)"

Leave Initial directoy blank, and click OK.  Now when you click Tools, Windows Explorer, Windows Explorer will open with the current file you are editing selected.

Splendidly written article, if only all bloggers provided this level of high-level quality content the internet would be a good deal better place. Please keep it up! Cheers.
