Officescan 7.x client 100 percent CPU usage by system process TSC.exe

4. March 2011

High CPU usage regularly occurs in the tsc.exe process of the OfficeScan 7.x client

Operating System:
Windows 2000 Advanced Server, Windows 2000 Server, Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition, Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition, Windows XP

Problem:

High CPU usage regularly occurs in the OfficeScan client because by default, they run the Damage Cleanup Services (DCS) every 2 hours. DCS also runs on the following occasions:

You perform a manual cleanup from the OfficeScan client console.

The Real-time Scan detects Trojans or spyware on the client machine.

A Cleanup Now is performed from the OfficeScan managament console.

The Scheduled Scan and the cleaning of spyware/grayware are enabled in the Global Client Settings.

The OfficeScan server deploys a hot fix or a patch.

The OfficeScan Master Service is restarted.

Solution:

To minimize the CPU usage caused by DCS, do any of the following:

Change the schedule of the cleanup:

1.

Open the OfficeScan management console then click Clients > Global Client Settings.

2.

Under "Scheduled Clean Settings", select the frequency of the scheduled clean. You can also choose to disable it.

3.

Click Save.

Disable the cleanup when the Real-time Scan service starts:

1.

On the OfficeScan server, open the \PCCSRV\ofcscan.ini in a text editor.

2.

Under "[Global Setting]", add the following line:

DisableTSCAtStart=1

3.

Save and close the file.

Disable the cleanup when an update is deployed:

1.

Open the OfficeScan management console then click Updates > Client Deployment > Automatic Deployment.

2.

Under "Event-triggered Deployment", uncheck the Scan the computer after update checkbox.

3.

Click Save.
